One Decision, Made Honestly

Andrewhmoeller works on garage door openers across Long Beach, out of a shop on Cherry Ave in the 90815 ZIP. Openers are the whole of what we do, which is unusual, and it is deliberate.

Nearly every call we take is the same question wearing different clothes. The opener has started doing something odd, and the owner wants to know whether to spend a little money now or a lot of money once. Nobody has explained the difference to them.

Where the Line Actually Sits

Age alone is a poor guide. We have replaced four year old units because the board failed and the manufacturer had already stopped making the replacement, and we have put gear kits into openers older than the people who called us, and those openers are still running.

What decides it is the failed part. Drive gears, capacitors, limit switches, travel sensors, wall buttons and safety eyes are all cheap and quick. Logic boards and motors are where the arithmetic turns, because at that point you are paying half the price of a new unit for one component in an old machine.

The Part Nobody Mentions

An opener does not lift a garage door. The springs do that. The opener supplies the last few pounds of push and pull, which is why a half horsepower motor can move a door that a person struggles to hold.

So when a five year old opener burns out, the opener usually is not the story. The door was out of balance and the motor was carrying weight it was never designed to carry. Fitting a new unit to that same door just restarts the clock on the same failure. We check balance by hand on every visit, before we quote anything.

What We Will Not Do

We will not condemn a board we have not tested, because a shorted sensor wire and a dead board look identical from the doorway. We will not bypass a safety eye to make a door close, because UL 325 entrapment protection is the reason the door stops for a child.

And if your opener needs a twenty dollar part, we will tell you that, even though the other quote pays better.
